[Glee] you love the limelight too (Mercedes/Rachel)

Title: you love the limelight too
Fandom: Glee
Length: 806 words
Prompt:[livejournal.com profile] glee_kink_meme: A bitter diva-off between rachel and mercedes goes from being really heated to really hot and sexy.
Pairing: Mercedes/Rachel
Other: Episode tag for 2x13. PG for sexuality.

Summary: Mercedes and Rachel "practice" for the diva-off.

Mercedes didn't even want to be in the same room as Rachel today. Their friendship, a tentative connection mostly born from a shared one with Kurt, now that Mercedes thought about it, had been dealt a heavy blow. They were both divas, no denying it. So Rachel had to know how offensive it was to say that someone else was untalented. Mercedes had thought that they were past petty things like that. Apparently not.

So how had she been talked into this? Every inch of childish white-painted furniture, every carefully framed photo and well-polished trophy -- they pissed Mercedes off. She paced around Rachel's room, scuffing her boots on the ugly floor rug.

"I'm just saying," Rachel said again, earnest but cold, "Broadway is a must. The first diva-off established this tradition, and there's no reason to break it."

"It's not that you want an advantage by singing something that you've sang ten million times before, or anything like that," Mercedes replied, voice thick with sarcasm. "If you think you need to weight the playing field to start with, are you as much of a diva as you claim to be?"

Rachel's hand shot out and she pointed dramatically at Mercedes from her prim perch on her bed, which had too many pillows for any one person, and also too many ruffles.

"How dare you --" Rachel began, and then she caught herself visibly. "We'll settle this in song, not in a brawl, like common people."

Mercedes rolled her eyes, although some part of her wanted to laugh suddenly. That would have been funny if it hadn't been directed at her.

"I suppose you have something picked out already," she said, kicking a small stuffed toy, which skidded across the floor, to Rachel's clear irritation.

Rachel tossed her neck, brushing her hair out of her face, and said, "As a matter of fact, I do. And you might know this song just as well as I do, Mercedes. I'm sure that you and Kurt have seen the inferior movie version of this musical. I am proposing that we sing "Take Me or Leave Me," the duet-fight between Maureen and Joanne from Rent. If we can summon even a tiny percentage of the tension that exists between them, then I feel it will be a perfect song for the two of us."

"What, do you think I'm Joanne?" Mercedes blurted out. "Is this because I'm black?"

"No!" Rachel said as she shot to her feet. "It would suit our blended voices while still giving us plenty of room to showcase our individual talents, which makes it a perfect choice. And maybe we'll be able to work out our problems in song."

"I don't care who you flirt with," Mercedes muttered.

"Not the point." Rachel darted over to her computer and found the track. Mercedes was unsurprised to hear that she had the karaoke version. Rachel took Maureen's part, of course. She danced around the room, flirting with furniture, and Mercedes didn't have to try very hard to summon enough irritation for their purposes. She backed Rachel up against the bed, singing in her face, and Rachel sang right back, not backing down.

Their voices soared together until Rachel said mockingly, "Kiss me, Pookie," and even though it was an utter break of character, Mercedes did. She grabbed the front of Rachel's sweater and pulled her in without hesitation. She knew this might be serious when Rachel kept kissing her back, missing the next cue.

This was fighting in a different way. Mercedes walked Rachel back to the bed and pushed her down on it, still kissing her fiercely. Rachel's hands snaked up under Mercedes's shirt, so Mercedes thought that Rachel didn't really mind the interruption, which was shocking in itself.

They separated a moment, gasping. "Tension," Rachel said breathily. "What did I sa--"

Mercedes bit Rachel's lip. She dug her nails into Rachel's shoulder and Rachel made a pleased sound.

"We are going to rock this performance," Mercedes said confidently. "Now, take your shirt off."

"I thought we were practicing," Rachel said, squirming under Mercedes for the hem anyway.

"Who's in your bed?" Mercedes sang. "We'll practice later."

"If this is part of your plan to win the Diva-Off, I'll have you know --" Rachel began. Mercedes rolled her eyes again.

"I expect you to bring it next week," she said, "and if you don't, I'll never kiss you again."

She hadn't realized until she said it that she did want to kiss Rachel again, and that was a little surprising, but she could think about that later. Apparently Rachel felt the same, finally pulling her shirt off.

Later, there were vocal runs, but probably not for the reason that most people would have guessed.
