[Cardcaptor Sakura] every day (Syaoran/Sakura)

Title: every day
Fandom: Cardcaptor Sakura
Length: 542 words
Prompt: Christmas card fic!
Pairing: Syaoran/Sakura established
Other: n/a

Excerpt: Syaoran thought that weddings shouldn't take place in winter's cold; Sakura was grateful that the two of them could take advantage of their time off university. He was overwhelmed by the crowds; she learned everyone's names. Sometimes he really wondered where he would be without her.

Syaoran often looked back at being eleven with a sense of wonderment. Every day seemed to bring a new challenge – navigating a foreign country on his own, fighting magical beings that appeared without warning or consideration, falling in love against his wishes, and underneath all of that, trying to succeed in the fourth grade.

Somehow, facing all of that never seemed as tiring as the day-to-day details here in Hong Kong. Fifteen years had passed since that trip and this visit to China, and Syaoran was exhausted. Sometimes he thought he should have declined having a place in his youngest sister's wedding (although never seriously; this was his sister, after all). Sakura, at least, was just as peppy and excited as she had always been. She'd been adopted by his relatives with no qualms, and at the end of the day he often found her in deep conversation with a cousin or niece or uncle, trying her hardest with the Japanese he'd taught her.

Syaoran thought that weddings shouldn't take place in winter's cold; Sakura was grateful that the two of them could take advantage of their time off university. He was overwhelmed by the crowds; she learned everyone's names. Sometimes he really wondered where he would be without her.

The 25th of December was a Wednesday, two days before the wedding, and Syaoran was dragged along on several last minute shopping trips, forced to choose between two nearly-identical flower arrangements – twice – and had to stand still for almost an hour as his best suit was tailored. He fell into bed that night with Sakura, wrapping his arms around her and smelling her hair, thankful that the day was over.

And then he thought of something that made him bolt upright. He'd hardly moved before Sakura was awake too. Rubbing her eyes blurrily, she said, "Huh?"

"I forgot!" he said, twisting his fingers in his hair. He looked at her worriedly.

"Forgot what?"

Syaoran sighed. "It was Christmas today. We should have – I promised you a good date this year. For once."

Sakura sat up. She yawned and then wrapped her arms around him, linking her fingers at the small of his back.

"Do you remember our first Christmas?" she asked sleepily.

"Huh?"

"When we fought over giving presents to Yukito-san. And then the next year, Eriol was complicating things. And after that –"

He listened in mounting horror to her list. There had been something unfortunate interrupting each holiday, down to the pipes bursting in their bathroom last year.

"That's why I said—" he began. She interrupted him with a kiss to the cheek.

"I had a good day with you, Syaoran. It didn't have to be something big or special. You were there."

"Are you sure?" he asked. She nodded, smiling a little.

"I love you," she said. "Now, let's sleep."

He lay back down beside her, let her tangle their limbs and snuggle close for comfort. She was asleep again quickly, easily, and he listened to her quiet breaths in the dark.

And then he smiled to himself, and went to sleep.
