The first thing Puck says, sliding into the chair as if he has no care in the world, is, "I'm impressed." He lifts his eyebrows and twitches them in a way that Kurt assumes is supposed to be attractive.
"Shut up," Kurt says. He crosses his arms and leans back in the chair.
"Hey, you called me," Puck answers, holding up his hands to show that he's harmless - a lie, but such a blatant one that Kurt can hardly count it; it's like saying the sky is green. "I hope you don't expect me to bail you out, though, 'cause it's too cold to mow lawns right now."
"Bail," Kurt says sharply, as if he's just considered it. His eyes widen. "My dad is going to kill me!"
"Not if you don't tell him what we were doing," Puck says, a grin sliding slowly onto his face. He does the eyebrow twitch again and Kurt really wants to hit him, but there's glass in the way.
"Not even a chance," he snaps. "I don't know why I bothered! You were the one--"
He bites off the rest of his sentence, because the whole point was to take the fall and prevent Puck from being stuck in juvie for the rest of his natural life. Kurt had plans for the boy. They didn't involve fluorescent lighting and orange jumpsuits.
"Call Finn and get Finn to call my dad," he says instead. "If you're gone by the time he gets here, maybe he won't figure it out."
"Will do, delinquent," Puck answers, entirely too cheerfully, and his chair scrapes against the tile when he gets up. "Hang in there, man."
He saunters off and when the door shuts, Kurt lets his head hang, sighing.
"My dad is going to kill me," he mumbles, "and when he finally lets me out of the house, he'll kill me again when he finds out I'm dating Puck."
This was why he never tried living dangerously. Bad idea. He followed the policeman back to the holding cell to wait.
Next time, he was just going to run when he saw the flashing lights.
