She showed up in a trenchcoat, and underneath, something red and glimmering and ridiculous.
"We're going clubbing," Holly said, and she ignored Emma's protests all the way to the car. She was patient enough as Emma scrubbed down the seat, but once she took off, tires screeching, she started chattering, and Emma could hardly get in a word edgewise.
"I don't normally do this," Holly said more than once, casting Emma sidelong glances that managed to seem more worried than pining. (So that was already better than going somewhere with Will.) "First dates, yes, casual sex, yes, but I've never gone out with someone more than twice." She chuckled nervously. Emma stared at her hands in her lap, and felt herself blush.
"It's something about you, Red," Holly said, her tone sincere.
Emma thought about Carl and found herself glad that Holly hadn't brought a ring with her. For a woman with few dates, Emma had had a relatively large number of serious relationships.
Holly left the coat in the car and ran up to the club in ridiculous sparkly heels that matched her flapper dress, laughing about the cold and grabbing Emma's hand without warning, linking their fingers almost before Emma realized. There were too many people in the club, with the dark and flashing lights, and Emma squeezed Holly's hand so hard that she was sure it hurt.
"Come on," Holly leaned forward and spoke in her ear, above the wave of sound. "You can dance, right? I know you can."
And then Holly was, her body flowing sensuously, and she was all leg, all sequins shining. She didn't look anachronistic anymore, or silly. She looked happy, and she was holding Emma's hand still.
Emma shut her eyes and let the music move her a little. She felt - she knew she must look utterly awkward, but Holly made a happy sound and then drifted around behind her. She pressed her hips against Emma's butt, skimmed her hand down Emma's sides, a touch so fleeting that Emma hardly had time to gasp. But she'd liked it, and she liked the way that Holly moved. She could feel the rustle of the fringe against her skirt, and Holly rested her hands on Emma's hips.
"I've never done this before," Emma said suddenly, whirling around to stare at Holly. Holly looped her arms around Emma's shoulders and smiled.
"That's what makes it fun!"
The next song came on, a little slower, less raucous than the first. It wasn't quite a slow dance, but when Holly pulled Emma's hand onto her shoulder and her opposite side, they began to dance like awkward prom-goers.
"I'm glad you came with me," Holly said, leaning forward to brush her forehead against Emma's. "I know this really isn't your thing."
"I'm trying," Emma said, and sighed, "to be more open. To try things. Even if -- even though Carl and I didn't work out, he helped me realize that there's a really big world out there."
Holly nodded. "I can show you the world," she sang out suddenly, "shining, shimmering, splendid!"
Emma blinked, and then she realized. "Aladdin?" she said incredulously.
"Hell yeah," Holly said. "Princess with a tiger escaping the walls of her palace. What's not to like?"
"You would look good in harem pants," Emma said, almost surprising herself with the statement, and Holly too, if her lifted eyebrow was any indication.
"I'll buy some tomorrow!" Holly said. "Now, let's dance."
There were still people standing much too close to Emma on all sides. The room was hot, the strobes blinked, and none of that mattered, because Holly's palms were flat on the back of Emma's thighs and Emma was hoping that they'd inch higher. She really was, and the thought made her mouth dry and her heart pound again.
"What do you want to do for our next date?" she asked, and that was when Holly kissed her.
