[Magic Knight Rayearth] a sympathy with sounds (Clef/Presea)
Title: a sympathy with sounds
Fandom: Magic Knight Rayearth/K-ON! fusion
Length: 623 words
Prompt: my heart is bound to beat right out my untrimmed chest for
chibidl's birthdayfic
Pairing: Clef/Presea
Other: The AU in which the Knights + Clef are a band, and Presea is their school sponsor. Blame Polychromatic again.
Excerpt: He doesn't know what to say, so he writes her a song. He spends hours in his room with the door locked, strumming the guitar, and when his father passes by, he pauses to listen and sighs. Oh, young love.
He doesn't know what to say, so he writes her a song. He spends hours in his room with the door locked, strumming the guitar, and when his father passes by, he pauses to listen and sighs. Oh, young love. (His other dad apparently doesn't hear the guitar sounds and gives him an agonizingly serious talk about growing up and body changes and strange urges. Clef nods to everything in hopes to escape earlier, but it's still the longest half-hour of his life.)
He doesn't know why she'd choose him. He's a high-school kid, painfully earnest and practical, and she's ten years older, energetic and sensitive. He has to be imagining that she treats him differently from the others. He has to be imagining it, so that's why he writes the song. He wants her to notice him so much that it hurts, and at the same time, is scared of what that notice may mean. What if she rejects his advances? What if she just thinks of him as one of her students? What if she doesn't, but is unwilling to take the risk?
(The last possibility hurts the least. At least then he'd have the might-have-been's.)
It's nearly summer vacation before he finishes the song to his satisfaction, but he doesn't meet any resistance when he offers the sheet music to the rest of the band. In fact, Fuu smiles at him knowingly until he begins to blush, mortified that he's this easy to read. They agree to play it for Presea-sensei at their final meeting before break.
He pulls out the chair for her and then takes his place at the front of the band. He doesn't usually sing lead, and Presea's curiosity is clear, but he feels like he'll lose his breath if he stares any longer, so he shuts his eyes and begins to play.
And once his fingers are on the strings he lets go, dives into the music, letting his lyrics and his instrument say the things that he hasn't dared to voice. There's a moment of breathless silence when the band crashes to a halt, and then Presea begins to clap, grinning.
"That was so beautiful!" she says. "I can't believe you wrote that, Clef-kun!"
He nods just a little, feeling himself blush, and then busies himself in putting away the instruments. It's impossible to explain that he wrote it for her, not here in the middle of the club room surrounded by the girls. He lingers as the rest of the band says their goodbyes, and finally it's just the two of them in a room that suddenly seems much smaller than it was with more people in it.
"You really have a gift," Presea says, watching as he shuts his guitar case.
"I had," he answers, ducking his head, "a really great inspiration." He meets her eyes and she tucks a stray hair behind her ear, looking a little uncertain.
"She's a lucky girl, then," she says finally.
"Sensei," he begins, and then stops. He sings it back to her, one of the verses about the way she gestures when she gets excited and how he can't help but watch her hands, always, and wish that he could hold them.
She takes a deep breath and then offers him one, almost delicately. He steps forward to take it. They pause there in the music room, for just a moment, fingers brushing, before someone walks by outside and they spring apart, eyes as wide as if they'd been doing something much worse.
"I'll - I'll see you tomorrow, okay?" she says. He watches her rush past and out the door.
But the next day, as he steals looks at her while setting up before practice, he realizes she's humming a familiar tune. And that's enough, for a start.
