[Glee] Cheer (Brittany/Tina)

Title: Cheer
Fandom: Glee
Length: 1256 words
Prompt: Rarepairs requests on [livejournal.com profile] glee_anon: Brittany/Tina.
Pairing: Brittany/Tina; past Tina/Artie mentioned
Other: AU after 1x09 Wheels.

Excerpt: "Oh, not anymore," Kurt says, waving a hand airily. He leans forward and stares at her with interest. "You' like her, don't you? This isn't Katy Perry-type lesbianism, is it? I don't think it is," he singsongs.

Brittany might be simple, but she is kind, and friendly when Santana isn't around to influence her. She agreed quite readily to participate in Kurt's reenactment of Beyonce's "Single Ladies" video, and when they take a break in the middle to sit around and talk and laugh, Brittany keeps putting a hand on Tina's knee, just skimming her skin.

Brittany leaves first. After Burt's interruption, no one really wants to finish the video-- at least, not today. Kurt's mind is full of the very serious problem that Brittany has shifted, not alleviated, and he can't even be mad at her, because he knows it's not intentional. Tina has to talk him out of hypervenilating while she waits for her mom to pick her up. She wants to tell him that she doesn't think Burt will hate him, even if he comes out, but before she can, Kurt stops panicking to grin at her.

"I think Brittany likes you," he says, fixing his hair with a careful gesture that Tina has always thought of as triumphant. He nudges her playfully and Tina blushes before she can help it.

"I think Brittany is dating Mike Chang," she says, and then hesitates, "or p-p-possibly Santana Lopez."

"Oh, not anymore," Kurt says, waving a hand airily. He leans forward and stares at her with interest. "You like her, don't you? This isn't Katy Perry-type lesbianism, is it? I don't think it is," he singsongs.

"K-k-kurt," she begins, and the stutter might be assumed, but it does get worse when she is nervous. It's become second nature to her, after all.

"You should go for it," he says, nodding empathically. "Guys like lesbians. You won't be thrown in any dumpsters."

"Guys only like lesbians who r-r-really end up with guys instead," she says softly, because she has thought about it. Kurt takes her hand and pats it.

"If you have the chance to be happy, you should," he says sincerely, and she nods.

Maybe Brittany does like her. After that video, the Cheerio seems to seek her out more often, and usually without Santana in tow. They sit in the bleachers after cheerleading practice and paint each other's nails (though Brittany always has to take it off when she gets home because Sue doesn't think that black fingernails are appropriate for a cheerleader). And sometimes they talk too, about music or their friends or other things. Brittany might not be good at math, or biology, or-- most of school, really-- but she watches the same shows Tina likes and she seems to enjoy it when Tina tries to explain things like the fact that the square root of four isn't really rainbows.

After a while, she forgets to stutter around Brittany, but the blonde accepts it with good grace. When Tina had the same conversation with Artie Abrams, who had been an old friend and crush of hers, it hadn't gone half as well (they still aren't talking, and Tina would be sadder about this if Brittany wasn't so adamant about cheering her up all the time). She expects the same by this point from anyone. She realizes that what she has been doing is wrong, but it's going to be as hard to stop as it was, being desperate enough to start. She's taking it in steps.

"You have a pretty voice," Brittany says, shrugging, when Tina tries haltingly to explain. "I'm glad you can talk better."

Tina's heart warms and she leans over to hug Brittany. Brittany smells like strawberries and the special shake that Sue makes all of her girls drink, but Tina is really beginning to like that smell.

Tina begins going to Brittany's cheerleading performances when she can, sitting up in a top row and cheering on her friend, even though she realizes that she's cheering on Sue Sylvester by proxy, and the idea makes her a little ill. But Brittany always grins and does a little twirl when she sees Tina in the audience (and Santana always scowls; they've had a couple of awkward conversations about who Brittany "belongs" to, both of which ended abruptly with Brittany's appearance in their midst). And Tina goes to football games too, where she can at least pretend she's staring at the male members of the Glee Club instead of waiting for Brittany's skirt to fly up again.

Sometime in late October, after the Cheerios have wiped the floor with every other pompom princess in Ohio and the football team has just received their final painful loss of the season, Brittany takes Tina's hand and drags her behind the bleachers. A clarinet player in the marching band is playing Taps as the band marches away, and most of the cheerleaders and football players are plotting to go to Denny's and hook up afterward. Tina was making her way down to the field with the vague hope of getting a ride home from Kurt instead of calling her parents, but Brittany appears and beams at her and puts a finger to her lips in exaggerated secrecy.

When they're in the darkness under the bleachers and Tina is half-worrying about the drug trade she's heard rumors about and half-wondering what Brittany's up to, Brittany leans forward and presses her lips to Tina's and she knows.

And Kurt is right, of course, she's not a Katy-Perry-for-the-boys'-sake lesbian; she's bisexual and she almost gasps when Brittany kisses her but then she's leaning forward, resting a hand on the back of Brittany's neck. Brittany takes that as an invitation to add tongue and Tina moans.

"Do you want to be my girlfriend?" Brittany asks breathlessly when the kiss ends. Tina nods, and then they're kissing again. Tina's hands find Brittany's hips and the warm inch of flesh between uniform top and uniform skirt. She digs her fingers in a little, like a promise, and Brittany's mouth is even more ardent in response.

"I think we should go make out," Brittany says very seriously, pulling back a little and then nibbling on Tina's lip.

"I'd like that," Tina answers, and they leave the darkness under the bleachers swinging their hands. There is still a glum arrangement of football players on the field, with Tanaka shouting at them, but almost as if he's been waiting, Kurt dares to sneak a glance at Tina. Tina gives him a thumbs-up. Brittany follows her gaze and then waves cheerfully at Kurt too.

He presses his hands to his heart and gives them an approving smile before Tanaka's voice becomes even louder and he's forced to pay attention again.

"Kurt told me that you liked me after we did his dancing video," Brittany says as they head toward the parking lot. "He told me I should go for it. You know..." she says, lowering her voice and leaning in conspiratorially, "that I should kiss you and stuff. He told me you liked girls and boys. And since I do too, we'll always have a lot to talk about. Movie stars, I mean, and musicians. Don't you think Angelina Jolie is sexy?"

Tina laughs and swings their hands and promises herself to buy Kurt some new skin-care products with her next allowance, even if it costs all she has and savings. She answers Brittany's questions and they sit on the curb as they wait for Brittany's dad to pick them up, thigh pressed to thigh, and Brittany's hand warm on Tina's knee.
