Haruka and Michiru had saved each other's lives six times before they kissed once. They had already lost their breaths smacked into walls and each other, bled into each other's wounds. They had the intimacy of soldiers in a foxhole, along with the weariness and the pain.
"I don't know if this is a good idea," Haruka said, already leaning into Michiru's space and pursing her lips. Michiru giggled softly, leaning forward and placing a firm hand on the back of Haruka's neck. They kissed, their lips parting and exploratory.
It didn't feel like a first kiss, it felt like an eighth, a fiftieth, like they'd been kissing all their lives and known each other for eternity.
Haruka had been adjusting to her new life. She'd been working out and eating better and learning, quickly and desperately, how to fight. Now she was beginning to realize how deeply she'd fallen. Princess Uranus had Princess Neptune, for now and for ever.
"Are you sure yet, or would you like to try again and see?" Michiru said, eyes twinkling. She wrapped her arms around Haruka's shoulders, teasing the slope of her arm.
"I wouldn't mind a second opinion," Haruka answered with a low chuckle, leaning forward again, and it felt just as right as it had the first time.
