Maybe it will be pointless in the end, but Ryou always hopes that there's a little bit of himself in Bakura. He's finally begun to accept the fact that the Thief King has chosen him; whatever chance had flung them together was not going to relent until Bakura was totally done with him. It was a ripping, back and forth, and Ryou was tired of struggling.

He knows that Bakura is with him all the time. He knows it when he feels a spark of irritation at Yugi, just for smiling at him, because someone who looks like the Pharaoh should never smile at them, in Bakura's opinion. He knows Bakura is there when he bites down unnecessary comebacks and when he fights down the urge to take instead of pay. He also knows that not all of that is Bakura-- some of it is natural instinct, boyish charm, personal annoyance-- but he can't separate the two any longer.

He hopes, though, that Bakura can't separate them either. In mental realms he can, of course, Ryou has been a playing card and a chess piece in Bakura's schemes. But he hopes that occasional regret will stab the thief, occasional fondness, occasional attachment. If he can affect Bakura in this way, maybe they can learn to cooperate, instead of being parasite and host.

If you live with someone in the manner they do, even, then you have to learn to like them, or you'll destroy yourself. Ryou has taken the first step, and the second.

It might take a while before Bakura shuffles forward in response, but Ryou is willing to wait.
