Leah is always coiled tight; she reminds Bella more of a big cat than a wolf, but Bella never mentions it (she likes not having her face clawed off).

There are a limited number of conversations they can have - boys are definitely out, and high school seems too far away. "A lifetime," Bella says once, and Leah just glares and turns away. Her lifetime won't match Bella's: she'll be wolf for as long as the vampires insist on hanging around.

Leah isn't sure why she let Bella run to her. She snaps and snarls and says little when she can. The anger is overwhelming. Bella just smiles weakly and takes verbal abuse without protest. Edward has ruined her; Jacob has ruined her. Or maybe she never learned how to think for herself. She stays here in this (too small) cottage in the woods with the wolf princess and occasionally Seth, but he can't stand the solitude. Bella can't choose - seems honestly incapable of it. She reads romance novels over and over and still doesn't know her own heart.

It's warm for late fall and Leah has long since foregone modesty in this place. She's wearing a thin tank top without a bra, the smallest shorts she owns, and she paces back and forth in front of the door in hope of a cooling wind. The fan whines unevenly and doesn't help much. It's currently pointed at the back of Bella's neck, even though Bella tried to offer it to her. She'd refused with a curt nod and is now regretting it a little. Sweat drips down her nose.

Bella shuts her book with a sigh and rests it on her knees.

"Leah," she says, tone almost inquiring, and Leah knows this will be another conversation she can't stand to have, the merits of Jacob versus Edward, and she growls low in her throat. And then she's pushing Bella down on the small bed, using a knee to spread Bella's legs, and her teeth are on Bella's neck.

She does not rip; she does not bite or howl. She licks, delicately, at the skin above Bella's pulse. Bella moans in a manner that sends even more warmth to puddle in Leah's stomach. She arches into Leah's touch and now, at least, Leah understands Jacob's point of view. If you have any idea how beautiful she is when aroused, you would have to chase her. There is no way to resist.

Her hand slides into Bella's shirt and Bella thrusts her hips against Leah's thigh.

"Mine," Leah says. "Mine."

In the morning, they're gone. There are many other forests in Washington.
