Excerpt: Emma Pillsbury is used to her own quirks, tricks, and rituals. She knows the crippling feeling of being stuck in her body, letting fear make her decisions. She is a refugee from OCD. Like many refugees, she does her best to carry on. Will is off-limits. Maybe she'll never find his equal. But she still wants to survive.
He's the first man who makes her feel clean.
It doesn't matter what Sue has to say about his hair, or the fact that he sometimes eats without washing his hands first. She'd let him brush her hair out of her eyes or scrape the gum off her shoe. She might even let him kiss her if he shaved.
But he's married. (And then he isn't-- but still.)
Emma Pillsbury is used to her own quirks, tricks, and rituals. She knows the crippling feeling of being stuck in her body, letting fear make her decisions. She is a refugee from OCD. Like many refugees, she does her best to carry on. Will is off-limits. Maybe she'll never find his equal. But she still wants to survive.
She knows what to do. She draws invisible boundary lines but crosses them one by one. She's never had so much trouble saying no before (never had so much to say no to). She's letting him consume her, remake her, and prioritize over her. It's the last that hurts the most; the first two are just frightening.
Finally she realizes - I should come first; furthermore - I should come first to me.
She tells him no. She'll find a way to deal with her own problems. She's taken a few chances and now she knows she can take more.
When the dentist asks her to dinner, she says yes.
