Finding that One Special Person You Want to Annoy for the Rest of Your Life (Clow/Yuuko)
Title: Finding that One Special Person You Want to Annoy for the Rest of Your Life
Fandom:
polychromatic AU
Length: 1024 words.
Prompt: From a silly conversation that Chi and I had in which Clow proposed that they ought to get married at Chinese New Year... which is the lunar new year as well. Oh, and Valentine's Day, of course. How convenient!
Pairing: Clow/Yuuko
Other: Title from a quote by Rita Rudner.
Excerpt: "Not at all," she answered. "I don't want to do it," and she met his eyes, "because you have not asked me properly."
Clow and Yuuko celebrated the new year much as they had celebrated the old-- with a couple of drinks in the late evening, Yuuko sprawled out across her couch and Clow slouched comfortably in his chair. At midnight, they both leaned over and clinked glasses.
"Nine months," Yuuko said after a long moment, sipping her drink and throwing an arm lazily over her eyes.
"Hmm?" Clow asked, his voice as relaxed and quiet.
"How long I've been here. This time," she said.
"Long enough for a birth," Clow said after a moment. She snorted.
"Long enough to see a new year," she said, "by solar time, anyway."
"It's always nice to have an excuse to celebrate newness," he answered, leaning back in his chair. "We'll have to do something special for the lunar new year."
"And why is that?"
He smiled sweetly at her. "It's Valentine's Day as well," he answered. "Perhaps we should get married."
Yuuko lifted her arm and looked at him. She made a dismissive noise. "Why would we want to do that?"
"Something new for the new year," he suggested.
"There are simpler alternatives," she said, shifting to pick up her drink again, her eyes on him.
"It is a natural progression," he continued. She made a dismissive noise, her eyes still focused on him in challenge.
"And who is to say that?"
He shrugged. After a long moment, he said, "Of course, we could get married because we are very deeply in love."
A slow smile slipped across her face. "That seems to be a popular reason to marry, these days." But she said nothing else, and after a moment he ventured, "And you don't want to do anything popular?"
She sighed, reached for her pipe, and then set it down again, considering. "Not at all," she answered. "I don't want to do it," and she met his eyes, "because you have not asked me properly."
Clow chuckled. "I should have known." He got up from his chair and she watched as he smoothed down his shirt and took two careful steps toward her couch before bending down on one knee and reaching for her hand. She let him have it, still smirking a little.
"Yuuko Ichihara," he said, "would you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"
She considered the question, tapping one painted fingernail against her lips. "You forgot the ring, you know," she said.
"I thought I'd let you choose it," he answered swiftly. She grinned.
"You might be cleverer than I give you credit for," Yuuko said. "Two good choices in a row. All right, I suppose."
It wasn't much of a yes, but Clow knew it was probably as much enthusiasm as she would show him. He kissed her hand, and then her temple, getting up from his crouch to join her on the couch. She made room lazily.
"This time," she said, "no taking the universe to pieces, hmm?"
"This time," he said, smiling, stroking her hair, "you said yes."
She scowled at him. "If that was the problem then, I would have said yes before."
"It wasn't," he answered, for the moment sober, and he kissed her cheek. After a moment, she shook her head.
"I am marrying an idiot," she said.
"A lucky idiot," he said cheerfully, and refilled her glass.

Despite Yuuko's usual flair for theater, she seemed determined to keep this to a quiet affair. They'd have friends over for fireworks on the holiday, because whose fireworks were better than those of a pair of accomplished mages? But she didn't want a big ceremony, perhaps because, despite the fact that she had been very firmly settled in Clow's house for nearly a year, this was the City, and she'd left him before.
"This is for our amusement," she said, ring glittering on her hand, and he just smiled and agreed.
They chose Mokona to officiate, because there were few individuals whose words were more official than a god's, and Soel and Clef stood as their witnesses. When Yuuko came down the staircase in a Chinese gown of red satin, Clow nearly forgot to breathe. She might not have wanted a large ceremony, but she hadn't neglected her appearance, her hair trailing down her back, its darkness contrasting with the red ribbons she had woven into it.
"Forgetting to breathe is creepy, Clow," she said to him when she took her place next to him. She hit him over the head with her bouquet before handing it to Clef (who looked as if he wasn't quite sure what to do with it, and he wanted to laugh. Yuuko would always be Yuuko, and honestly, he wouldn't have it any other way.
"Of course, dear," he said, taking her hand, and she rolled her eyes but pressed close to him as Mokona began to speak.
The creator didn't talk long, and then Clow was kissing her gently, as Soel shouted in happiness and leapt up onto Clow's shoulder to nuzzle at his neck. Yuuko reached over to pet it too. Clef smiled a little, and Mokona's pleased amusement showed in his thoughts to them.
"All right," she said, finally pulling herself away. Her eyes glinted with mischief. "Let's see if I can get Watanuki to catch the bouquet."
"Did you even tell him you were getting married?" Clow asked. She shook her head and clapped her hands together.
"Twice the surprise!" she said happily. She twined her arm in Clow's and began dragging him towards the back door. Their friends had already begun to assemble in the backyard for the evening's promised show; he could hear the quiet rumble of distant conversation.
"If you'd like," he answered, also quite amused. Soel giggled at the idea.
"Would you go on and get everyone together?" Yuuko asked their companions. Clef nodded and the three of them went on ahead. Clow looked down at Yuuko.
"Happy New Year," she said to him, smiling a little. He stole a kiss.
"Happy New Year," he answered, and they went to greet their guests.
