Excerpt: He hadn't expected Yukito to be... who he was. More like Yue in plainclothes. But Yukito was, in basic personality and appearance, as different as could be.
"You lost me," Yue said, furious. His feathers were ruffled like those of an angry bird's and his pupils were pinpoints. He was, in fact, shaking a little.
"It must be done," Clow said, alarmed but not showing it. He hadn't expected--
He hadn't expected Yukito to be... who he was. More like Yue in plainclothes. But Yukito was, in basic personality and appearance, as different as could be. He was personable. He was friendly to strangers. He would be, in fact, the perfect boy to charm a little green-eyed girl.
Clow had known the duality to be a gamble. The spells were old and half-rotted away-- he wouldn't have even attempted it if he'd thought Yue could get along in public, but Yue refused to consider learning how to be human. He didn't have to pretend with Clow, he had said haughtily. He would have no need to pretend. Ever.
The problem was, he would have the need to pretend-- and not just to pretend, but to pretend well, to be unexpected until Yue himself could awaken. The priestess would likely put his heiress off the trail, but there was always the chance that someone would notice. In fact, Clow could See around the edges of it. There would be a need for Yukito.
"I did not lose you," Clow said to the moon angel, leaning forward and running his long fingers along one of the guardian's pilot feathers. Yue shuddered. His wings were quite sensitive.
"You are Yukito," he continued as Yue's anger began to dissipate just a little. He leaned forward to run his hand across Yue's cheek. Yue's body language was still stiff, but his eyes were a bit softer.
"I am not," Yue muttered sulkily, and pulled away abruptly, rustling his wings and turning his back on Clow.
"It is for the good," Clow promised. Yue turned over his shoulder and fixed his creator with a long glance.
"Your good, or mine?" he said carefully. Without waiting for an answer, he stalked away.
Clow sighed and watched him go. "For both of us," he said softly, but he knew Yue wouldn't understand for a long time.
