Children lose their youth too soon

I wanted her to be a child forever.

I knew it wouldn't last. Time flows whether we'd like it to or not. Even the long-lived magician that made Sakura's cards couldn't stop time for very long. He was the most powerful magician in the world at one point, apparently. Even the brat spoke of him in respectful tones.

I couldn't stop time when my mother died, though time did move much too slowly. I slogged through the pain, thick as mud, and when I found my way back to my feet my childhood was gone.

I was ten, and she was three, and it became my goal to let her be a child as long as she needed to be. Forever, if it had to be, I would live at home and call her a monster and invite Yukito over as often as she wanted if only--

She didn't grow up and leave me too.

But when she opened that book and that brat came, I knew that was it. When I gave my powers to Yue, I was positive she was gone. She wasn't my little sister the monster anymore. She was her own person. Her childhood hardly lasted any longer than mine did, but at least she gained friends instead of lost her mother.

She understood that I would always be there for her, and she treasured that. Her friend Daidouji told me that the choice she made to move was a very difficult one, but she made it. That was why I took off work to see her off her at the airport.

They called for her flight and she got up and hugged me hard, and then Dad. Then she settled into line. She must have known I wouldn't go until I couldn't see her any longer, because before she stepped into boarding she waved with her free hand. The other hand was captured by the brat, of course. He even managed a wave of his own. Better take care of my little sister, brat. I will be watching you.

Well, actually I won't, because I won't be there. I wanted my sister to be a child forever, but now she's gone. Her hand waved above the crowd of people and I paused a moment to wonder when my little sister got so tall. And then she was gone.
