She didn't visit, but sometimes she walked the stones of the palace in her dreams or his, bells on her ankles and the white-and-purple dress of a princess draped across her royally. She could have been a queen here, but she never was. She didn't want to be.
Still, he greeted her with a deep bow, with a kiss upon upon the hand, a man who'd mastered courtly gestures centuries ago. He'd served as the court magician for an emperor once, and he'd retained the regal atmosphere.
Her feet were bare and he might have kissed them, if she'd really been there, if his touches were more than imagined. She'd offered him her hand; he'd kissed the air and dreamed of flesh he'd never touch again in life.
She was still his advisor, his goddess, his downfall. She peered down at the sand drifting over his feet and frowned.
"I don't know how you stand it here. I can nearly feel the heat and I'm not really here."
"There's a moon," he said simply. She turned to face the sky, the rising moon, and didn't respond.
"Sakura said her second word today," he said, as if picking up a conversation that they'd only paused a moment before. He smiled, every inch the proud father.
"Oh?" she said, turning to him, letting a smile flit across her own face. A grin like his was contagious.
"Brother," he confided. "You should have seen Touya's face. He's finally realized what a miracle his sister is."
"You're cultivating the brother complex early," she teased.
"It's natural," he said, holding up a hand in his defense.
Yuuko's foot jingled as she nudged him (though of course he didn't feel it). "A foregone conclusion, hmm?"
"Some things just don't change," he replied. He looked down at her with such longing in his eyes.
"Yes," she said. She hopped up on the window ledge, arranging her skirts, and looked out upon that moon. "You're going to wake up in a few minutes," she continued.
"Are you happy?" he asked. She looked back over her shoulder, meeting his eyes for a long moment. Then she smiled just a little.
"I'm always happier when there's no one around to steal my booze," she answered, kicking her feet, bells ringing into the night. The moon that had just been rising was already beginning to set.
"Then you must be very happy," he said gently.
"Good morning, Clow," she replied, the scene falling to pieces as the dream broke.
He opened his eyes. The dawn was indeed breaking, the sunlight glowing a bright patch on the wall opposite the window. He always managed to wake before anyone else in the palace.
"Good morning, Yuuko," he mumbled, rising from his bed to greet the sun.

We run on fumes
Your life and mine
Like the sands of time
Slippin' right on through
