Excerpt: "There is so much to know," Luna breathes into the tin-can phone, her eyes never leaving Ginny's.
Before Luna leaves school, she gives Ginny a tin-can phone. Ginny has no idea what it is until Luna holds it to her ear, grinning, and mimicking a phone call.
How Luna had found out about this American Muggle tradition, Ginny has no idea, but Luna reads and reads and reads, all sorts of interesting things, Muggle stories and wizarding stories alike. She is constantly telling Ginny new things, constantly repeating her mantra ("Wit beyond measure...") and the words from Luna's mouth always make Ginny smiile.
"There is so much to know," Luna breathes into the tin-can phone, her eyes never leaving Ginny's. Ginny flushes and tries to think about Harry. She knows that he was lying. He'll come back. He's one of those men.
In the dim torchlight, Luna's hair shines like a veela's and Ginny swallows. When she leaves Hogwarts, she brings the tin-can phone, though the cans are dented (when Luna gave them to her, they were) and the string is thin (who knows where Luna found them) and they are already beginning to rust (of course it is a metaphor).
She lays awake at night, absolutely quiet, so that she doesn't wake Hermione, and she wonders why neither of them thought to bewitch the cans so that they could actually be used. Probably because they were distracted when Luna caught her in the hallway, and more distracted still when Ginny pushed her back into an alcove and kissed her in thanks. Ginny's lips were strangely rough, but Luna's were soft, as always, and that's what Ginny remembers as she turns over to go back to sleep.
She knows that Harry is coming back, but she wishes she knew where Luna is. She hopes that Luna has someone to tell stories to (she hopes selfishly that Luna has found no one to kiss, but that's not really a worry).
She brings the tin-can phone back to Hogwarts next year and listens to Luna's stories, but Harry rests in the back of her mind and it's not the same again (but how could it be?).
"Wit beyond measure," Luna says, grinning, and she is a bridesmaid in the wedding.

And I love this Luna. "Wit beyond measure," indeed!
