He'd never thought he'd serve a princess who wasn't Tomoyo-hime, never dreamed he'd find himself a parent to the orphaned and confused. He'd certainly never expected to bind himself to that mage, the one he'd hated from the moment they'd met.
"There are greater things than strength," Tomoyo-hime had said to him the day he'd left. It was a lesson he'd learned at his father's knee; a lesson he lost the day his father fell.
And here this other princess was teaching him, all over again. Maybe he hadn't expected it... but maybe he'd needed it.
The witch had said that nothing happened without a reason. He hated to agree with her, but she might be right on that point.
In any case, she'd promised to grant his wish, and she'd given water and saved the walking dead (and maybe Fai would stop, someday, being dead on the inside). He'd paid with his dear sword and he would get the worth of his price.
You could have more than one promise. That was something else the princess had taught him. So he'd keep moving, until it was time to go home again for good.
