Excerpt: "It's been a while," Yuuko said, tilting her head to one side in acknowledgment of Haruka's smile.
"It's been a while," Yuuko said, tilting her head to one side in acknowledgment of Haruka's smile.
"His dreams were easier to find than yours," the man replied, dragging on his cigarette and meeting her eyes easily.
She knew it was true, and she didn't begrudge him that. It was hard for a ghost to enter her dimension... and in any case, the dead man had no wish that she could grant.
She lit her pipe and they smoked for a moment, watching it trail up into the black dream sky. She didn't try to touch him. Neither did he move. She sighed a smoke-ring.
"He really likes you," she said. She wondered if Watanuki would have liked Clow as much. She suspected not. He was at times even more inscrutable than she was.
"I'm glad," the priest said. He stubbed out his cigarette and when he laid his hand down again, he rested tobacco-stained fingers on top of her own. His hand was warm and dry, because this was a dream, and he'd learned enough control for that. He chuckled.
"My grandson has always been prone to odd choices."
"They're good kids," Yuuko said. She exhaled slowly and then leaned her head on his shoulder.
"They might make it, if they try," Haruka answered.
"Mm," Yuuko mumbled, shutting her eyes and listening to the wind blow through the yard.
She woke alone, smiling. She could still feel the press of his hand on hers, if she concentrated. She was good with dreams, after all.
She got up to check on Watanuki, but she knew he'd be all right.
