Joyful (Fai gen)
Title: Joyful
Fandom: Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle/Cardcaptor Sakura
Length: 427 words
Prompt:
clampanonmeme: Fai + Nakuru, anything.
Pairing: Fai gen
Other: AU in which the travelers return to the xH world for a feather. Set early in series.
Excerpt: Fai shakes Nakuru's hand; she wraps her arms around his neck, makes him promise to return if he can.
Fai likes Nakuru; all her smiles are genuine. He watches her cavort with Mokona and her cheer brings a grin to his own lips. Eriol's eyes are full of a quiet joy: the satisfaction of a parent, watching his children.
"You made new guardians," Fai says, to make conversation. Nakuru puts Mokona on her head, giggling.
"Needs must," the still boyish mage replies. "And I wanted to."
His smile is as constant as Nakuru's and Fai stands there silently, considering. He'd known of Clow and Yuuko-- they were famous across the worlds. But he was surprised to learn that Clow had reincarnated. His aura speaks of power, but it is no longer overwhelming. Fai's curse wouldn't have activated for Hiiragizawa Eriol.
Fai suspects that this is intentional, this loss of magic, but he cannot comprehend why an uncursed magician would lessen his power so dramatically. Fai had his tattoos, but they are borne of necessity.
Still, before them dance proof of his immense skills and strength. (Dance, literally; Nakuru suggested tag, but Mokona is winning.) Nakuru's aura is threaded with the cool steel power of Eriol's magic. She glows in his reflection. For the first time, Fai wonders what powers Mokona.
"Will she seek a new master someday?" he asks. Chii would like her, but that's not why he asks.
"She will die when I do," he replies, face serene.
There aren't many magicians whose works persist after death, but earlier this week they'd met Cerberus and Yue and Eriol's answer surprises Fai.
"I have," he says to Fai's mild face, "left enough of a mark already."
Fai has lived four times as long as his appearance suggests, but Eriol's tone makes him feel very young. There are other questions he might have asked the boy who once was Clow, but Nakuru approaches and takes Fai breathlessly by the hand.
"Play with us!" she urges, and Mokona leaps onto his neck and snuggles. Fai laughs. They chase each other through English gardens until Syaoran, Kurogane, and Spinel return from the depths of Eriol's library. Syaoran holds a slender volume in his hands. He bows deeply to Eriol. Eriol doesn't smirk, though he wants to, a little. The same souls, perhaps, but different personalities, to be sure.
"Don't worry about it," he says when they want to reimburse him. "For the Princess."
Fai shakes Nakuru's hand; she wraps her arms around his neck, makes him promise to return if he can.
He wonders if Chii has ever been this happy.
