Excerpt: Watanuki didn't know when it was, exactly, that his job began to feel doable.
Watanuki didn't know when it was, exactly, that his job began to feel doable. He'd begun in a huff, confusion on all sides, resentful of Yuuko's demands and not entirely sure that he wanted his wish granted by her, thankyouverymuch.
But now, even when she was making him do odd things like fall into jars that led to other worlds, or taking water from an abandoned well a corpse kept watch over, or volunteering him for even stranger missions... he was used to it. He just sighed and went along with her. And he knew how to make her favorite food, where to shop, and how she liked the storeroom arranged (an ever-evolving process).
In short, Watanuki had learned how to manage Yuuko, how to make her happy. If he had realized this fact, he might even have been proud of himself.
"Cheer up, Yuuko-san," he said. "I'll make you something."
Her melancholy dissolved utterly and she grinned brightly. And maybe the foodstuff she wanted was difficult to make, and rather irrelevant to their conversation, but he could do it.
He wanted to see her smile. He didn't really think about why. But Watanuki was changing, day by day, in her employment.
And she was smiling a lot more than she had for a while before he came.
