Cardcaptor Watanuki (Watanuki gen)
Title: Cardcaptor Watanuki
Fandom: CLAMP-verse; xxxHOLiC/CCS
Length: 1261 words
Prompt:
poly_crack Kink Meme: Cardcaptor Watanuki.
Pairing: xH and CCS casts; ensemble gen
Other: A "missing" moment set somewhere after xH ch124. Should actually be canon-compliant, except that this never happened on-screen in canon.
Excerpt: "We don't have a loud-mouthed plush toy or a stick-in-the-mud winged guardian," she said thoughtfully, "but you'll just have to do, Watanuki-kun~."
"I guess there are a Syaoran-kun and Sakura-san here on this world too... I'd like to meet them someday." --Watanuki, xxxHOLiC ch124.
Watanuki was used to unusual tasks by now. He'd managed to walk the Aurora Path, he'd met strangers from other dimensions, he'd somehow survived ghost stories night... He was, if not thrilled to be asked to do odd things, at least not so surprised anymore.
"Catching what?" he asked again, watching Yuuko's grin as it somehow widened.
"Clow cards," she said again. "Though at this point they're the Sakura cards, of course..." She giggled.
Watanuki frowned.
"We don't have a loud-mouthed plush toy or a stick-in-the-mud winged guardian," she said thoughtfully, "but you'll just have to do, Watanuki-kun~."
'WHAT IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?" he began, but Yuuko shoved a pink plastic wand into one of his hands, and Mokona into the other.
"Do tell me how it works out," she said cheerily, pointing him towards the park.
*
He sat down on one of the concrete animals in the park and tried to feel less self-conscious, which was difficult, because he hadn't even had time to remove his kerchief or apron. There he was, a high school student in a somewhat frilly pink apron, clutching a plastic wand with a talking meatbun on his shoulder. He'd be surprised if he didn't get arrested for being suspicious.
He turned the wand over in his hand again, pushing a button and watching it light up.
"She said this was just a model," he muttered. "The real one was made by that man, Clow Reed. So why do I have this?"
"Sakura has the real one~!" Mokona replied cheerfully, snuggling his neck.
"What?" Watanuki asked, and that was when the pink monster jumped onto his face and bowled him over.
*
Watanuki blinked irritably and managed to scramble away from the creature, which had paused to study him a short distance away. It was very pink, with beady little eyes, and it didn't look very friendly. And from the way that no one else seemed to notice it, Watanuki was sure it wasn't a natural being.
"Now, Watanuki!" Mokona crowed from its perch on the concrete animal (how it had avoided his tumble, Watanuki didn't know).
And because this was a task from Yuuko and he had, after all, seen any number of strange things with her, he managed to find his feet and point the wand at the creature. It seemed unimpressed.
"What do I do?" he said.
"You have to say--" Mokona began, but the pink creature jumped onto the wand, activating the sounds, and then onto Watanuki's shoulder for just a second, before falling onto Mokona.
Mokona laughed.
"WHAT IS THIS?" Watanuki demanded, staring up at the sky as if it would give answer. He was still surprised when a girl flew into view, bright wings on her back. She looked upset... and she looked like Sakura.
"Jump!" she called, landing, hardly seeming to notice Watanuki. The pink creature looked up at the sound of her voice. Mokona quit wrestling with it, poking it fondly in the cheek for a moment before it jumped into her arms-- and then, in a bright flash of light, changed into a card.
Watanuki blinked. "Sakura-chan?"
"How do you know my name?" she said, finally turning towards him, and that was when two other people ran onto the scene-- a boy who had to be Syaoran, in Chinese dress, and a dark-haired girl with a video camera. Self-consciously, Watanuki hid the toy wand behind his back.
"I, well..." Watanuki began.
"Didn't get there in time, Watanuki-kun?" Yuuko cooed. She poked him in the shoulder.
When had she even arrived? He opened his mouth to complain and she deftly removed the wand from his grip, twirling it around her hand once before handing it ceremonially to Sakura, handle first. She looked even more confused.
"What--?"
"Here, push the button," Yuuko said. She grinned. The dark-haired girl studied the witch curiously, and the other Syaoran scowled. Sakura pressed the button.
"Release!" the wand said, and she nearly dropped it.
"That looks like your old wand, Sakura-chan," the dark-haired girl said.
"Who are you?" Syaoran growled at Yuuko. She smiled, leaning down to be at his eye-level.
"You're the one who is his relative," she said, placing her hand under his chin and studying him for a long moment. Watanuki shivered. He hated it when she did that to him. He always felt as if she were grading him on something.
"What is that supposed to mean?" Syaoran replied, his shoulders tensing. He didn't quite lift the heavy sword in his hand, but Watanuki found himself focusing on it.
"I'm sorry about your genes," she replied, poking him in the nose and then striding over and picking up Mokona, petting its ears. Sakura watched in awe. The dark-haired girl had moved on to looking at Watanuki and he met her gaze grumpily.
"Nice apron," she said.
"Thank you," he muttered, because he could tell that she was sincere... though he suspected she was amused as well.
"It's been a while since Jump has seen Mokona," Yuuko said to Sakura, "so forgive him for being excited." She patted Mokona on the head.
"Hoee?" Sakura said, watching as Mokona nodded, and then nuzzled at Yuuko's hand.
"A long time!" it said to Sakura. "We used to play together!"
"Who are you?" Syaoran asked, approaching in such a way that he stood just a little bit in front of Sakura. Watanuki smiled. The same souls, Yuuko had said. He could tell.
"I don't think the Li's would have talked about me very much," she replied, cocking her head to one side. Syaoran continued scowling.
"What does that mean?"
Yuuko turned away from him to Watanuki.
"Taichazuke for dinner," she said. "You have failed so regrettably at your magical girl duties, but you can still cook!"
"I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THIS WAS EVEN ABOUT!" Watanuki complained. "And that means I have to go out and get the fish--"
"Nice to meet you, Sakura-chan," Yuuko cooed, plucking the toy wand from Sakura's hands and then grabbing Watanuki by his collar and dragging him away, ignoring his complaints.
*
"Nice to meet you too?" Sakura said faintly, watching the tall woman and her angry companion leave. She stared at the card in her hand, and then at Syaoran. He seemed to have no answers either.
"She had such a beautiful dress," Tomoyo said cheerfully. "I hope we meet her again~!"
"I hope we don't," Syaoran muttered, still feeling the press of her fingers against his skin.
"I think we have," Sakura said without really understanding what she meant. She blinked and then carefully tucked Jump back into her pocket.
They used to play together...
She stepped out into the street and looked in both direction. The dark-haired woman had disappeared. There were office buildings towering in both directions, only interrupted once by a curiously empty abandoned lot. She looked thoughtfully at it for a moment, and then shrugged.
"Let's go home," she said, returning to her companions and taking Syaoran's hand as they started walking again.
*
Yuuko paused just past the gate of the shop and watched as Sakura studied the streets. When the girl turned to walk away, Yuuko smiled.
"She can't see the shop?" Watanuki asked, watching her go.
"She can't," Yuuko replied, her gaze soft for a moment. Then she looked down at her employee.
"Taichazuke, I said?"
"I heard you the first time! And if you'd told me earlier instead of sending me on a crazy mission for no reason--" Watanuki grumbled.
"She grants her own wishes," Yuuko said, smiling, and she turned to go back into the shop.
