Where You Are (defining home) (Clow/Yuuko)

Title: Where You Are (defining home)
Fandom: xxxHOLiC
Length: 257 words
Prompt: n/a
Pairing: Clow/Yuuko
Other: Afterlife-fic. Spoilers for recent chapters.
Excerpt: He tells her that he loves her all the time; he loves everything, everyone, the beings he creates, the people he guides, desserts, wines, dead languages, his hodge-podge family.

She knows better than to say she loves him; words bind and she can't bind him to this Earth. Her bindings would snap and lash back, smacking her, and the worst part is, he would feel bad about it.

He tells her that he loves her all the time; he loves everything, everyone, the beings he creates, the people he guides, desserts, wines, dead languages, his hodge-podge family.

The way he loves her is different than all of these; the way he loves her breaks a universe. And she still can't say it back, even when they meet in the afterlife.

(How strange is it that the two of them reached this place, after? Not because they expected to live forever-- even their hubris did not dare presume that-- but because of the nature of their deaths, the price, the sacrifice. Afterlife is a gift, but from whom? Who pays? Yuuko spends some time in wondering.)

He looks just the same as he did the day he strode off across dimensions to play foster parent in the desert; she finds herself as young as she was the day he left. There is starlight in his eyes, and hopes and dreams and all of those things that bled away from him when he saw what he had done to her.

She hits him on the arm; he smiles.

"Is there any liquor here?" she asks.

"I've missed you too, beloved," he says. He doesn't need lip service to know she loves him.

After all, she's here now, isn't she?
