Just in Case (Eriol gen)
Title: Just in Case
Length: 372 words
Prompt: n/a
Pairing: Eriol gen; Clow/Yuuko
Other: vague TRC spoilers/references
Excerpt: He knows that it would have made little sense to pour centuries of memories into a twelve-year-old's form, even if that twelve-year-old was anticipating them. Still, he dislikes the way that Clow has hidden things from him.
Sometimes, Eriol finds Clow frustrating.
It isn't that he's ungrateful for his life, or that he believes that his task is a responsibility he does not deserve. He is much more irritated by Clow's amazingly large ego. Clow sorts things, he arranges them to his own ends-- even for his future selves.
(One might accuse Eriol of his own arrogance, but it's wrapped in Clow's and in foreknowledge. Eriol put out the sun; Clow nearly destroyed time-space. It's not equivalent.)
Eriol has Clow's memories. Most of them, anyway. He suspects that most of his relationship with Yuuko has been censored; either for Clow's protection or Yuuko's comfort, he isn't sure.
He knows that it would have made little sense to pour centuries of memories into a twelve-year-old's form, even if that twelve-year-old was anticipating them. Still, he dislikes the way that Clow has hidden things from him. Most of the old memories seem to be accompanied by a "just in case" sign, and they only emerge when he needs them. It is nearly like remembering the future; not quite, but just as disorienting. Just in case you meet Madoushi again, this is what to expect. Just in case Yue asks why, this is what you might tell him. Just in case Yuuko is angry with you...
He hasn't had to invoke that one yet, but he suspects he will, because there's a burning behind his eyes and he lifts his glasses up and rubs at his nose underneath, wearily. He knows, then, that he will have to call Sakura, and she'll answer after four rings. She'll sound tired but also frightened, and he'll have to explain to her how to give someone something precious in a dream.
And after that he will have to call Yuuko, and unless he is quick to speak, she'll probably hang up on him, and he knows that hearing her voice, lack of memories or not, will stun him for the moment she needs to react.
She'll call back, though.
And maybe one of these days he'll escape his duties as Clow again, but he doesn't know for sure. Clow didn't leave him that knowledge.
He was a frustrating man, indeed.
