Give and Take (f!Neville/m!Luna)

Title: Give and Take
Length: 475 words
Prompt: [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic: Harry Potter, girl!Neville/boy!Luna, you can't always get what you want
Pairing: Luca/Nell (Luna/Neville)
Other: Genderbending, but only Luna and Neville; everyone else's gender remains the same.
Excerpt: She doesn't understand Luca. He has the same problem she does-- everyone thinks he's weird and useless. He talks about creatures that don't exist and he seems to float through life tilted sideways.

Nell knows you can't always get what you want. She is, in fact, an expert on that one. Born the wrong gender to be the Boy Who Lived (not that anyone told her that until after), ignored by her House, tormented by the girls in other Houses. It isn't that she wants recognition, so much. More like, respect. Just a little.

She doesn't understand Luca. He has the same problem she does-- everyone thinks he's weird and useless. He talks about creatures that don't exist and he seems to float through life tilted sideways. He doesn't see the same things that everyone else sees.

Honestly, Nell thinks that's sort of cool, but she'd never say anything. Luca has this habit of just staring, staring until you can't stand it, like he's trying to see straight through you. It makes her nervous.

They're a part of Potter's group, sure, but on the outskirts, no matter that Luca refers to them all as "his best friends." Maybe that's why Luca comes to find her at the end of Harry's Christmas party. It's the first great celebration they've had since the War ended, and it had been absolutely lovely until the point that Hermione dropped a glass and they all sprang up when it broke on the floor, wands at the ready.

Nell is sitting there under the tree, contemplating the incident, with her arms wrapped around her knees. She sneaked out while they were playing Exploding Snap. She doesn't want anything much to do with explosions, anymore.

Luca sits down right next to her without asking. If she reached out, she'd brush his shoulder, but he doesn't say anything for a long moment.

"I'm glad you're alive," he says finally, leaning over and pushing the hair out of Nell's eyes.

"Ah,whaa?" she breathes.

"I'm glad that you survived the War. And that Harry and Hermione and Ron and the others did, too, of course. And myself, of course."

His tone is matter-of-fact, but he's doing that staring thing again, and Nell can't look away.

"Thanks, Luca," she says, her voice squeaking a little.

"Mistletoe," Luca says, and before she processes his words, he kisses her gently on the mouth. It's a soft but lingering kiss and she feels something bloom warmly in her stomach before he pulls away.

"I-- I don't see any mistletoe," she says, and then regrets it immediately. It sounds like she's making excuses.

Luca doesn't seem to notice that. He looks at everything sideways, after all.

"The snorflug must have taken it away. They love the taste of mistletoe."

"Oh?" Nell says weakly. "How about that."

"I would kiss you again anyway, though," Luca continues, pressing his mouth against hers again, and this time she doesn't protest at all.

For once, in fact, she's getting what she wants.
