Growing Up (Layton gen)

Title: Growing Up

Excerpt: "Professor?" Luke said hesitantly. Layton laughed, and then leaned down and hugged his apprentice suddenly.

It was a long time before Layton realized it. He didn't realize it, in fact, until Luke came home in a new hat.

"What do you think, Professor?" Luke asked, spinning around a bit with the same excess energy he always had, and the professor just gaped for a moment.

It was him. Or rather, he was him. He was... the Luke they'd met in the future.

Luke had grown up.

"Professor?" Luke said hesitantly. Layton laughed, and then leaned down and hugged his apprentice suddenly.

"Professor?" Luke asked again.

"It's nothing," Layton said.

It was a lot, actually. Even though it had turned out that the other Luke wasn't really Luke older, Layton had retained a somewhat paranoid thought that maybe Luke would grow up to be that Luke, that young man with no matters and excessive pride. He'd worried about it behind closed doors and didn't tell either Luke or Flora.

But in the meantime, the children grew. And last week, Luke had helped Mrs. Kite take her groceries home, and solved a cat puzzle, and then he had spent some time at the animal shelter, his other job.

He never missed teatime, never. He was, in fact, the gentleman that Layton had been raising him to be. Whenever Luke returned to his family, they could be proud of him.

Layton's worry had been unjustified, and he actually felt a little bad for it. The other Luke had been such a convincing facade...

But he wasn't real. And Luke was.
