They first met when she was just a young princess, when she was haughty and obnoxious and unlovable-- and most importantly, seventeen. And then he loved her, even though she stomped her foot and complained and he despaired the way he had to protect her from the boys on the street.

She was very lovely, and he was very young, and when they first met he loved her because she was his princess and it was his job.

Of course, over time, she changed, and he changed too. He watched her grow into a proper princess, watched her marry a proper prince, and he stayed. When he was young, the things that bound him to his job were a sense of duty and a need for employment. He loved her then because she was his queen and because she needed someone to lean on.

He didn't expect that she would ever love him back, and he wasn't even sure that what he felt for her was real love, instead of devotion. So when her sideways looks became more coy, when she started whispering, and most importantly, keeping secrets like a girl again, he didn't understand it. He wondered if he was going to be fired.

He'd been with the queen for nearly thirty years, through the loss of her husband and the loss of her son. Sometimes, he knew, people broke. They couldn't stand the reminder of times past.

So when she kissed him, finally, it was a total surprise.

Finally, he could love her not just as his queen, his employer, his obligation, but as a woman.

She was just as lovely then as she was at seventeen.
