Excerpt: Her mother still takes her to the little grave, every year, and points him out.
Su Chin remembers her baby brother. Her mother still takes her to the little grave, every year, and points him out.
"Your brother," she says, as if Su Chin would forget from March to March. "He could not be borned, too small."
Su Chin's mother prays like she's fighting with God, screwing her eyes shut and moving her lips like she's having a colossal argument. Su Chin waits patiently by the little grave and thinks about babies.
The sign probably wouldn't do anything, she knows that. But it was the only thing she had to do. She gave up on God long ago. She doesn't think that an all-knowing being would need so much shouting and coddling.
Juno is the first one who turns around.
