Excerpt: Yuuko was a woman of many vices; Clow was a man of none.
Yuuko was a woman of many vices; Clow was a man of none. She drank too much and smoked too strongly and showed entirely too much leg. If he hadn't known the power that rested in each carefully-painted fingernail, he would have turned around and left the shop.
She was complicated where he was simple, and for a long time he couldn't see how working for her would teach him the things he needed to know. She showed him along the way, nearly as an aside to the important work she was supposedly doing. She was easily distractable, wearing her slippers to shreds the week she taught him how to dance, simply because she wanted to.
He learned more from her in three years than he had learned from his home tutors in twelve, and when they parted ways she leaned forward and kissed him on the cheek.
"You'll be back," she whispered in his ear, and because it was Yuuko, he didn't doubt her.
