Dissembling (Clow/Yuuko)
Title: Dissembling
Day/Theme: Oct 21 // some assembly required
Series: xxxHOLiC
Character/Pairing: Clow/Yuuko
Rating: G; vague Tsubasa references
Excerpt: "Do you really mean to do this?" she asked, bursting into the workroom at hurricane force. Clow blinked and adjusted his glasses.
Yuuko's storeroom was always a mess, but the thing to note was that she knew where everything was. Perhaps one day she would get around to organizing the place so that someone else would be able to navigate it, but she didn't anticipate that happening any time soon.
The box sat in the storeroom for three days before she noticed it. At first she simply frowned with irritation, but curiousity bade her open it.
Then she was livid.
"Do you really mean to do this?" she asked, bursting into the workroom at hurricane force. Clow blinked and adjusted his glasses.
"Hmm?" he said. She thrust a sheaf of papers against his chest, and he took them gently and paged through them.
"Why, of course," he said, looking back up at her. "It must be done."
"Clow Reed!" she began furiously, and then deflated, turning her back to him. He was the only person who could provoke her through such rage and melancholy (often one right after the other).
"Yes, Yuuko-chan?" he said, voice gentle. He took a step and then put his arm around hers from behind. She let him lace her fingers.
"You can't... you can't build... like this. Maru and Moro, Mokona Modoki... they are something different. You cannot make living beings like these. Your key to happiness does not have some assembly required."
Her voice was soft but passionate. Clow sighed and hugged her then, enveloping her in his robes and his scent. He murmured against her collarbone.
"I know, I know, Yuuko-chan. It must be done, nonetheless. And I will love them. There is that. I will need your help, you know. For the children's sake."
She stood woodenly in his embrace for a moment, and then turned to face him.
"Everything will be all right," he said, and smiled, and she nearly believed him.
