Sometimes Vash thinks that he should give up looking-- looking for his brother, looking for that "love and peace" he tends to preach about, especially when he gets drunk-- but he's so used to searching that he doesn't know how to quit, or what he would do if he did.

And some nights he sits out on the desert sand, letting the cold seep through his coat (Plants feel cold, Plants feel hot, Plants feel everything) and he spins the barrels of his gun and wonders if what he's really waiting for is the magic bullet, the one to end his search forever, the wound he can never heal from. No one's gotten a headshot on him yet. Even his brother hasn't managed. But one of these days-- he has had too many close calls already-- it will come and end his journey.

The choice of deciding who lives and who dies is not yours and was never yours to make, Rem says in his head, the only woman he has ever loved fully and truly, and when she comes to mind he knows it's time to shake off the sand and go inside, to sleep until the next day dawns.

He can't decide when the magic bullet will come, but if he was a praying man he'd hope for soon. He's heavy, full of mercy, and he can't carry this cross any further through the lands.
