Excerpt: "What was it like at the beginning of the world?" I asked casually while we were loading crates onto the sea captain's boat. Joshua hefted his crate from one shoulder to the other and considered.

A few days after Joshua had dismissed my theory of universal stickiness, I decided to try a harder question.

"What was it like at the beginning of the world?" I asked casually while we were loading crates onto the sea captain's boat. Joshua hefted his crate from one shoulder to the other and considered.

"I don't know," he said finally. "My Father was there, but He's never told me."

"Didn't bring back a souvenir for His only Son? No parchment signed by the ever-famous Adam and Eve? No?"

"Don't be stupid, Biff," Joshua said in a pained voice. I shrugged, somehow managing not to upset my crate onto the ground, and grunted with the effort of lifting it before I replied.

"I just wondered. I mean, don't you wonder what it was like back then, before mother-in-laws?"

"You don't have one now," Joshua pointed out. Always trying to reason me out of interesting trains of thought. Who knew the Son of God was such a natural downer?

"Well, maybe when you get this whole "save the world" thing sorted out, I can have my choice of women. And their mother-in-laws. Being your best friend has to come with some perks."

I was just joking, as usual, but Joshua's eyes darkened like he was thinking too much (he always does), and we loaded the rest of the cargo in silence.

"Next time we talk I'll ask Him," he said finally when we were done, boarding the boat with the last heavy boxes.

"What?" I asked; I'd forgotten the conversation while I was sweating.

"What it was like before He created people to annoy Himself with," Joshua said, grinning, and his high spirits were infectious.

"You should ask him about stickiness, too," I said. "Just to cover all the bases."

"Uh huh," Joshua replied, shoving me in a brotherly way. "Like anyone would buy that one."
