A predator can hear fear, can see fear, can smell it on the wind. He knows the way it tightens his chest and sharpens his eyes. He can become the thing most feared with just a careful arrangement of teeth and a piercing gaze.

But prey knows fear in an even more intimate way-- he feels the fear, absorbs it, becomes it. Fear propels his legs and the beating of his heart and his very existence. (Prey doesn't live long without proper fear in his heart.)

When Simba saw himself as a lion, he knew fear as something that happened to other animals-- to the small creatures he hunted on hyperactive mornings, to the birds he chased and didn't expect to catch (but they didn't know that), and to Zazu even. Majordomo or not, the hornbill gulped a little under his young paw. Simba owned fear, like all predatory youngsters do.

But living with Pumbaa and Timon changed all of that. Later they would say, the ones who knew him best, that it made him a better king, when he came into his own. How many predators would take their time to know prey as equals, rather than servants? How many would learn to ignore the scrabbling fear of small creatures and the easy task it would be to trap a meerkat under one adolescent paw?

Only Simba, who broke himself down to build himself back up, who lived the circle of life and ate bugs and listened to those creatures that went bump in the African night.

He learned to fear himself, the things that he was capable of, the things (imagined) he had done, and that was really the thing that made him good at his job. He lived the balance, so he kept the balance, and the balance was his life.

You have to know fear's voice before you know how to cast it away, after all.
