Excerpt: Life in Agrabah is not as exciting as the traveling peddlers claim.

Life in Agrabah is not as exciting as the traveling peddlers claim. It is an irony of culture that the life of a peasant is nearly as unchangeable as the life of a princess.

She will marry by the end of the year, her father has made that clear. He is indulgent of her whims, but not this one-- to marry for love. He had loved her mother, most likely (she hoped, in her heart, and would never ask), but it had been a good match, most importantly. And he wouldn't marry her to a man who would be abusive or unkind. She might be able to find happiness.

But her choices were limited. She had only these princes, no matter how much time she spent during the day dreaming of the other life she might live down there in the city-- a normal person with no money and no escape from mediocrity, but surely those women had more choice in who they loved and married. Surely?

If not, perhaps there was still time-- very little time-- to redefine everything she knew. The urchin boy had a magic carpet. He was scruffy but his gaze was sweet and she thought maybe she'd be able to trust him in time.

She stared out her window, sighing and knowing she'd never find the courage (and as if her father would let her disappear). Maybe it was time to accept her fate.

She bit her lip and then started planning her escape.
