Second Waking (Mashiro gen)
Title: Second Waking
Length: 261
Prompt: n/a
Pairing: Mashiro gen
Other: PG-13 for sexual references; spoilers for end of series
Excerpt: "You apologize for everything, Mashiro-chan! You're such a girl," she said.
"Oh, I never dream," Mashiro said with an apologetic bow, running a hand through her hair. Haruka laughed.
"You apologize for everything, Mashiro-chan! You're such a girl," she said.
"I know, I know," Mashiro said, laughing. "But I never dream, really! I don't know why."
She didn't know why she was lying.
*
She didn't know why she had to lie, except that no one else ever said they had dreams like hers. They had dreams about bears and beavers, about flying and falling.
She had dreams about herself.
Mashiro dreamed-- and not every night, just once in a great while, after long fevers or a difficult night out-- that she was a boy. And that she would never be a girl, never.
And she dreamed that she saw herself coming towards her-- and the pronouns were all messy-- she watched her female self come towards her male self, and she-- he-- shuddered, and tried to get away, but he could not.
Her male self cried as her female self kissed him, as her hands slipped beneath his clothes to find....
And he was female too, somehow and it was all wrong and Mashiro didn't understand it at all.
*
She woke gasping, plunging her hands beneath the covers to find the stinky-sweet dampness of her body, putting her fingers to her nose and smelling the familiar smell, as though she feared it had gone in the night.
She would lay there in the dark and wait to go back to sleep, her fingers resting on her pubic bone in ridiculous worry.
But other than that, she never dreamed.
