Home is Where You Are (Soshi/Riiko)

Title: Home is Where You Are
Length: 471 words
Prompt: Absolute Boyfriend, Riiko/Soshi, more than friends
Pairing: Soshi/Riiko; Night/Riiko
Other: spoilers for end of series
Excerpt: Soshi had always hoped, oddly enough, that there was a reason behind her vehemence when she insisted to others that the two of them were "just friends."

Soshi had always hoped, oddly enough, that there was a reason behind her vehemence when she insisted to others that the two of them were "just friends." He hoped that she felt the tension between them, coiled like a spring, in those odd moments when they each seemed to remember-- I am a girl, I am a boy, he is a boy, she is a girl.

He hoped her denial was because she thought about that at night, too, when she was alone, in the apartment next door. Because he certainly thought about it, flat on his back with an arm thrown over his eyes, knowing he would be tired the next morning at school.

And he got up the courage to ask-- I am a boy, and you are a girl, and isn't this how life is supposed to work anyway and I don't mind doing the cooking really-- and he found out that he was right, but not quite. And maybe that was how it was supposed to be, he figured, as he packed his bags for Spain. After all, wasn't the greatest love story in the world Romeo and Juliet, not Darcy and Elizabeth? And didn't that boy in the manga Riiko was always reading win the heart of his mechanical bride?

Whether it was supposed to be or not, this was how it was, and Soshi was, even in love, practical. So he went to Spain and tried to lose Riiko in the dark hair of the Spanish crowds.

It didn't work very well and many nights he lay awake in his bedroom, arm thrown over his eyes, trying not to be jealous of Night-- because it wasn't gallant, and it wasn't as though Night could help the person that he was, and Riiko had, after all, made her choice. The logic didn't always help. He rubbed the bridge of his nose and tried to sleep.

When he got the letter, he stared at it for a long moment, trying to read the return address-- how could it feel so foreign to trace the letters of his homeland? He opened it, somehow knowing what was happening, even as the ring fell out and struck his foot. He sighed and picked it up and read the letter twice, cleaning his glasses in-between like he expected the message to change.

The two of you have always been something more than friends, and not simply because you made a promise to take care of Riiko. Riiko needs you, and she always has needed you. This is something I can-- and would-- never change.

Soshi grinned, and a little bit of hope welled in his heart, amidst the uncertainty.

"I need to go home to Riiko," he said aloud in Japanese, and then he did.

I always wonder if there are men out there who would really wait that long for you. Such a nice thought when I read the manga yet I couldn't help but wonder if Soshi had a nice little fling among all the Spanish beauties. xD

I always love it when I get to read a different fandom from you; this was no exception. Thanks for sharing! ♥
