Peace on Earth and Mercy Mild (Eriol/Tomoyo)
Title: Peace on Earth and Mercy Mild
Prompt: Christmas 2008 theme: Christmas is for lovers; Eriol/Tomoyo for
sheila_chan
Series: Cardcaptor Sakura
Character/Pairing: Eriol/Tomoyo; past Eriol/Kaho
Rating: G
Wordcount: 365 words
Excerpt: She wasn't really a Christian but she learned all of the old carols, verse by verse, and sang them in the evening when she bathed after work, soaking into her adopted country for long hours.
Their first Christmas together was a blur of emotion. They'd only been dating for two weeks, and their relationship was fresh, and new, and nerve-wracking, like beginnings always were. Tomoyo only knew the kind of Christmas she'd grown up with, a Christmas for romantics, but Christmas in England was a decidedly different holiday. There was still a great deal of joy and cheer, but it was different.
She loved it. She wasn't really a Christian but she learned all of the old carols, verse by verse, and sang them in the evening when she bathed after work, soaking into her adopted country for long hours.
Eriol was touched by her enthusiasm. In the few years after Kaho had left, he and Ruby and Spinel hadn't celebrated Christmas very much at all. He had become used to the idea of Christmas as a familial holiday, as it was in England, but he still saw it as a romantic holiday too, and her loss was painful in his mind for many years. He was almost surprised to find himself stringing Christmas lights (with his guardians' help at night, because it was much easier to do when one had wings). He bought a Christmas tree and Tomoyo helped him decorate it, and he even bought some mistletoe, like he needed an excuse to kiss her.
On Christmas Day, Nakuru woke him with her usual exuberance and by the time Tomoyo dropped by the gifts had all been unwrapped and Eriol was enjoying a cup of coffee, staring at the world outside and contemplating the warm feeling inside of him. He had decided it was satisfaction, and perhaps a touch of true happiness. He and Tomoyo were healing together. They were becoming new, as the year was soon to turn over.
She sat down at the table with him and rescued one of his hands from his cup to twine their fingers together, sliding her ankle against his under the table, and she smiled.
"Merry Christmas, Eriol," she said, a sprig of holly in her hair, and when he leaned forward and kissed her, it felt like the first time all over again.
