Excerpt: "Yeah?" Meiling said, with a short laugh. "I couldn't figure out if Mom was madder about my haircut or my having a girlfriend."
Meiling had been sitting out on the roof alone for only three minutes before she heard a half-muffled curse and then the soft sound of feet.
"You shut the window behind you," Syaoran said as he approached, rubbing his head. Meiling shrugged, her body language frosty.
"Didn't want anyone to realize where I went," she said pointedly. Syaoran stepped carefully on the tiles until he could perch beside her on the flattest part of the roof. When he sat down, she scooted away from him a bit.
"Aww, Meiling..." he said awkwardly, "don't be like this."
"Hmph," she said, looking out into the night instead of at him. Her eyes were glittering and he knew she wanted to sniffle, but she hated letting anyone see her cry.
"I, um, like your haircut. I think it suits you," he said to break the silence.
"Yeah?" Meiling said, with a short laugh. "I couldn't figure out if Mom was madder about my haircut or my having a girlfriend."
"Aunt wasn't sure how to react," Syaoran said carefully. Meiling frowned and kicked at a tile.
"You could have backed me up, you know," she grumbled. "You like Tomoyo, don't you?" She glared at him.
"Yes, yes," he said, lifting his hands in placation. "I just..." He sighed. Meiling smacked herself in the forehead theatrically, the sound loud in the night air.
"Not you too?! I swear if I meet one more homophobe I'm going to strangle them with my suspenders."
"No!" Syaoran said hurriedly. "It's not that. I'm happy for you. It's just... Okay, I'll just say it. Are you doing this to make me jealous? Are you not coping?"
Meiling scowled and smacked him in the back of the head. It wasn't the reaction he'd expected and it took another moment of half-muffled curses before he recovered.
"The world does not revolve around you, Li Syaoran! I gave you to Sakura and I don't regret it. It's been five years, for crying out loud! I love Tomoyo. I love her little laugh and her sweet eyes and the way she obsessively tapes everything and the fact that she's afraid of spiders and the way it feels to kiss her," Meiling said fiercely.
Syaoran watched her warily for a moment, fearing another outburst, and then relaxed a little. He clapped his cousin on the shoulder. She turned to look at him in puzzlement. It had been three weeks since she'd cut her hair short, but it was still strange to him to see the fauxhawk about her garnet eyes. It made her look older. Like... her actual age. Syaoran smiled.
"They'll deal. They dealt with me moving; they'll deal with you being a lesbian."
"But you came back," she said, for a moment betraying how worried she actually was.
"Well, maybe next time you should bring Tomoyo to meet them," he replied. "My sisters loved her, I remember."
"Who doesn't?" Meiling said, giggling. She rose from her seat on the roof and turned back towards the window. She stood there for a second, steeling herself to go back inside. At least the voices downstairs had gotten softer. That was probably a good sign.
"I'll put in a good word for your sanity," Syaoran offered, rising and brushing dust off his pants. Meiling grinned.
"Thanks," she said, stepping back into the house, and her cousin followed.
