Excerpt: Any normal person would lean back against the wall and relax a bit, even under the circumstances. Eriol didn't lean. He adjusted his cuffs instead and stood there with a placid, patient look on his face. Touya began to feel a little silly.

"I'm not really sure what you mean to accomplish by doing this," Eriol said, standing near the wall of the small room. Touya looked at him. Any normal person would lean back against the wall and relax a bit, even under the circumstances. Eriol didn't lean. He adjusted his cuffs instead and stood there with a placid, patient look on his face. Touya began to feel a little silly.

"I just want some sort of assurance," Touya said, crossing his arms. Eriol looked at him and took his glasses off He reached into his pocket and Touya's muscles twitched, but the magician simply withdrew a glasses-cleaning cloth and polished his lenses.

"I'm not sure what you mean," Eriol said. His tone was absent and honest. If Touya hadn't known he was lying, he would be convinced of his sincerity. It was absolutely infuriating.

"You don't need to pretend. Yue told me you were a powerful magician," Touya said, putting the cards out on the table. The word "magician" stuck in his throat. It was strange to say out loud, still strange to see the plushie-- the plushie, for goshsake!-- in the corridor, to meet his sister's doppelganger when she had something else to do-- hard still to think of Yue perched inside of Yukito, looking up at him. Yue saw more than Yukito ever did, Yukito's thoughts clouded by his good nature and preconceived notions of Touya.

But that wasn't the issue now. He looked at Eriol. Eriol looked back, tall and lithe and young. He's Dad's age, Touya reminded himself. But of course, the magician dealt in appearances. He presented himself as he wanted to be seen. Touya wasn't falling for it, though.

"I see," Eriol said, and nothing else. He continued not leaning against the wall. Touya shifted in front of the door, suddenly aware again that Eriol was a magician, and if Yue was to believed, could probably blink him into nonexistence.

"I want the assurance that you're not going to do anything unusual," Touya said, trying to recover his calm.

"I'm sure," Eriol said, "that Yue also told you that I have much less power now than I did the first time we met. And that I have nothing but good intentions for your sister.

Touya raised an eyebrow.

"Entirely platonic intentions, of course."

Touya looked at him closely and nodded. Then he thought for a moment.

"What do you think of Li?" he asked.

"Entirely within good limits for teasing," Eriol said without twitching. Touya moved away from the door, and clapped a hand on Eriol's shoulder as he moved to leave.

"Thanks for Yukito," he said. Perhaps it was what he had wanted to say all along, judging by the relief that flowed warmly along his skin.

"The man who did that for you is long dead," Eriol said, "and I retain but threads of memory. But I'm sure he would appreciate the sentiment."

He strode out of the room and Touya watched him go. He was a little confused, but he remembered that feeling from the last time Eriol had been in Tomoeda, and he let it go.
